we had the cease fire now announced between israel and hamas. if there isn't peace in washington on avoiding a fiscal cliff, will these gains go away in a hurry? >> joining us now, rich bernstein, cnbc contributor, anthony chan, and our own bob posani. bob, so far we've seen, what, trade on two things, right? the middle east and fiscal cliff this week. make sense of it. >> right now this week shows we're up 2% right across the board. we're in the honeymoon period between congress and wall street about fiscal cliff. they think a deal can be done. most of the traders feel we've got until about the week of december 10th to show progress. after that, markets will start turning south. congress holds the keys to a good part of the gdp next year. if we get a decent deal on the fiscal cliff, a moderate agreement, we'll be at 2, 2.5% gdp growth. if we go over the fiscal cliff, we go probably 0% gdp growth and i'm sure that earnings will go negative. think about it. >> i think there's no question that if the federal reserve can't sort of make the economy

reports coming out of israel citing officials on israel radio that a truce could be announced as late as tuesday night this evening with the arrival of u.s. secretary of state hillary clinton. that's what's happening outside of gaza. here in gaza it still feels like a war footing. in the last couple of hours the iz rally israelis have warned of imminent attacks on homes and neighborhoods and forcing people to leave their cities and move into central gaza and an indication that a ground invasion may be imminent if a truce is not sealed within the next couple of hours. you can get a sense there's a great sense of fear among ordinary people of gaza that in coming hours it could go either one of two ways. people are hoping it will be a truce but there's no doubt with these types of leaflets and thousands of soldiers amassed on the border, it could be a ominous sign that war is on the horizon. david? >> thank you very much. >> let's head back to headquarters. kate kelly has breaking news for us. >> we just received word that u.s. attorney for the southern district along with enforcement ar

as we continue to see fighting escalate in the gaza strip as we continue to watch what israel and what palestinians are doing in the area and the fact that there does not appear to be any cease-fire on the horizon although egypt's prime minister is in gaza today urging some international cooperation. we're also looking at the fact that oil prices here in the u.s. have basically erased this week's losses because of the gains that we're seeing currently in the oil complex. we're also hearing reports about iraqi enjoy saying that arabs should use oil to press israel over gaza. those headlines helping to cause this bid in the oil complex. in the gold market, we've seen steady declines over the last several sessions and now a little bit of stabilization in the gold market. there are concerns based on the world gold council report about demand particularly out of china. we've seen the cme lower margins for gold and silver so that may have an impact on the trading activity from here. carl, back to you at the white house. >> all right. thanks so much. in a half hour from now the president will
